“Slim in the City” Presents Con Sol, another great option for eating out and staying fit

Nestled at 279 Broadway St. in Cambridge sits a lovely Iberian-style restaurant by the name of Con Sol.
Tony Amaral opened the family-style restaurant in 2006, dedicating his time and passion for the restaurant business to provide fresh, authentic food.
Not only is the food always fresh, but employee Leah Mattson also stresses that with their many fresh, veggie-laden dishes, it’s more than possible to eat healthy at Con Sol.
The restaurant incorporates vegetables in many of their dishes, even offering a vegetarian rice casserole called “Paella de Horta.”  Mattson also mentioned a side dish of fresh vegetables that can be served upon request.
From sautéed shrimp and Sirloin steak entrees, to Kale soup and salads, one can see that the menu is far from boring, offering a plethora of delicious options.
However, like any restaurant, it’s easy to overindulge. That’s why Mattson suggests healthier options like the Garden Salad with Tuna, which provides a lean protein and can be served with dressing on the side or a light oil and vinegar.
Another healthy option that Mattson recommends would be ordering Tapas, which are smaller dishes great for portion control. With these mini-meals, you have the option to mix and match several dishes so you’re not eating one huge meal, such as Mejillones (muscles in marinara sauce) with the Olive Plate.
While there surely seems to be something for everyone at Con Sol, the restaurant makes sure to consider the customer’s dietary needs, especially when it comes to food allergies.  Mattson said if someone wants a substitution, or sauce on the side that they will kindly do that for you. Also, because of their awareness of allergies, none of their dishes have nuts in them, and the entire menu is gluten free!
While sticking to your diet and being conscious about your food choices is extremely important, it’s also OK to indulge once in a while. That’s where their homemade sangria comes in, which Mattson suggests sharing with friends. Hey, it’s all right to have a little fun once in a while, as long as you get back on track!
Air Fans: Stop into Con Sol to try out the Iberian cuisine yourself, and they will kindly take 10% off of your meal!

“Slim in the City” – Massimino’s – Enjoy Authentic Italian meals and stay on your meal plan

Owner Paul D’Amore opened Massimino’s with his father 19 years ago, and ever since then has been serving up authentic, fresh Italian cuisine at the restaurant.

D’Amore’s passion for health and genuine care for his customer’s is shown through his mindful choices of ingredients: that is, only the freshest, leanest and healthiest. As they do in Italy, all of the food at Massimino’s is cooked light on the salt and without butter, using Extra Virgin Olive Oil as a healthy substitute. D’Amore also buys everything fresh (not canned), including all his vegetables, meats and seasonal fish.

Going a step further toward the “healthy” trend, D’Amore has even hired a nutritionist, and is currently working on making the nutritional information for the menu available to customers. This will entitle you to know exactly what is in your food, and can be especially useful for those watching their diet or calorie intake. Read the rest of this entry »

Intervals: An Exerciser’s New Best Friend

The other day, a family friend came up to me in distress because he had hit a weight-loss plateau. “ I just can’t seem to lose weight or body fat anymore,” he said. “I work out hard every day. What could I possibly be doing wrong?” After I went over the basic checklist for maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine, I asked him if he incorporates interval training into his workouts. “Inter-what?” he replied, not having a clue what they were, which is a shame because intervals may very well be the missing ingredient into many peoples efforts to lose weight or tone up.

As it turns out, this friend of mine isn’t alone in his lack of interval knowledge. Many people I’ve spoken with either have no idea what intervals are, don’t know how to execute them the right way, or have never even tried. Let’s just say, if any of these apply to you, you are missing out on one of the best workout secrets out there!
Don’t worry; it’s not too late to get started. I’m here to inform you what exactly intervals are, why they are so good for you, and how to incorporate them into your workout regimen now.

What are Intervals, anyway? Read the rest of this entry »

How to Eat Healthy All Around the World

Tips to Follow With all Your Favorite Cuisines

When I went to Italy two summers ago, I was completely shocked when I sat down to eat dinner the first night. The food they served was nothing like the “Italian” food I was used to in the U.S.: huge portions of pasta and pizza loaded with creamy sauces, pounds of cheese and grease.  Rather, the food was prepared simple with Extra Virgin Olive oil, a small amount of cheese and delicious, fresh Italian spices.

“Now this is real Italian eating,” I thought to myself. I actually felt wonderful because it was easy to eat healthy, effortlessly. (I can’t say that about most pizza I’ve indulged in back home.) Read the rest of this entry »
